3 out of 5
This was definitely a solid meh.
Was it boring? Not really, Demon by My Side was actually quite action packed. The heroine has a backbone and really doesn’t take anyone’s shit.
Then why did I give it only 3 stars? Because cliche pretty much drips off these pages. In fact I’m pretty sure I’ve read this exact same storyline half a dozen times. Take out the demon and replace it with vampires or werewolves or faeries or any other paranormal/mythological creatures you can come up with.
Darcy Snow is what you would call a Hunter. She hunts spirits and demons before they make a tasty meal out of the puny humans. The only day that Hunters don’t go out is Halloween, which is the only day that all spirits and demons can cross over.
This takes place after Halloween but it never says when, I know that there is snow on the ground. Darcy is fighting a spirit, and that’s when they realize that there must be a tear between realms. They call together a meeting of the Hunters to figure out how to find the rift and what to do about it.
King Abaddon, King of the Demons calls on his son Jaral to find the rift and see how he can use it to his own advantage. Because not only is there a King of the Demons, there is also a Lord of the Spirits and he of course is Abaddon’s brother Arawn.
Now you should be able to see where I’m going. Darcy and Jaral meet while investigating the tear, they fight because…. Oh no, Hunter and Demon!
Demon by My Side has violence, sex, blood, demons, spirits, blackmail, magic, love, betrayal, redemption. I’m sure there’s more that I can’t think of off the top of my head.
