I Am The Weapon by Allen Zadoff

4 out of 5

Boy Nobody is the perennial new kid in school, the one few notice and nobody thinks much about. He shows up in a new high school, in a new town, under a new name, makes few friends and doesn’t stay long. Just long enough for someone in his new friend’s family to die — of “natural causes.” Mission accomplished, Boy Nobody disappears, and moves on to the next target.

When his own parents died of not-so-natural causes at the age of eleven, Boy Nobody found himself under the control of The Program, a shadowy government organization that uses brainwashed kids as counter-espionage operatives. But somewhere, deep inside Boy Nobody, is somebody: the boy he once was, the boy who wants normal things (like a real home, his parents back), a boy who wants out. And he just might want those things badly enough to sabotage The Program’s next mission.

Boy Nobody, or Ben on this assignment is given a mission where he is suppose to make friends with Sam, the governor of New York’s daughter. By becoming friends with Sam, he’s coming ever so close to carrying out his mission which is to assassinate the governor.

Ben doesn’t ask questions, he is a soldier; a patriot. He serves his country as a brainwashed teenage assassin, murdering CEOs who turn on their country. His job is to get close to his mark i.e. a son or daughter to be able to get to his objective. Ben usually is given a 2-3 month time frame but in this case, his time frame is 5 days.

I Am The Weapon was an action packed adventure, with a few turns and an awesome twist at the end. I enjoyed the sequence of the story in which everything progressed in the book but that there were flashbacks every couple of chapter. It was interesting to see how Boy Nobody was recruited, the inner working of a secret government body.

One of the best things to come out of this book was Howard, boy genius hacker extraordinaire. Everything about Howard screamed introvert geek.

Sam, Sam, Sam… you, my friend are a piece of work! That’s all I’ll say about you! I can’t give away to much info on Sam. But I do believe between her and Howard, they were able to shed some doubt Ben’s way. Howard did it cause he was a friend…. Sam on the other hand…

On to book 2, I Am The Mission!
